Planning & Development Department

Purpose & Responsibilities
 

The Planning and Development Department manages the growth of the City by implementing and maintaining the City's long-range vision, the Long Range Master Plan; administering the Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Regulations and Design Standards relative to residential, commercial, industrial, institutional and civic development; administering the adopted International Codes; conducting studies and plans on existing and future community conditions and needs; and assisting with economic retention, attraction and expansion. The Planning Department is also responsible for updating and maintaining the City's official land use and zoning maps.  The Department is comprised of three sections:  Planning and Zoning, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Inspections.

The City of Decatur adopted new building codes. The following codes went into EFFECT JULY 5, 2016:

2012 International Building Code with local amendments ​
​2012 International Mechanical Code with local amendments ​
​2012 International Plumbing Code with local amendments ​
​2014 National Electrical Code with local amendments ​
​2012 International Residential Code with local amendments ​
​2015 International Energy Conservation Code with local amendments ​
​2012 International Fuel Gas Code with local amendments ​
​2012 International Fire Code with local amendments ​

​​Any permits submitted after July 5, 2016 will need to meet the requirements of these codes.
